Locum Destination Review - Issue 17

The journal of record for the global destination industry

Editorial

Welcome to our new look issue of Locum Destination Review. We have taken on board your desire for a stronger thematic bias to each issue and from now on we will publish a focused journal in support of each of our themed Locum Forum Events.

Building on the very successful event held in partnership with GVA Grimley in June of this year (see side bar), the central theme of this special issue is mixed-use development and the key role that leisure and culture can play in attracting footfall, creating a unique ‘sense of place’ and, ultimately, raising values.

Simon Bee champions the cause for high quality, active, public spaces providing access to ‘new people experiences’. Chris Brown writes about the role of the enlightened developer who sees the long-term benefits of investing in leisure and culture – a rare breed in the UK.

David Geddes explores the recent fashion for high-rise mixed-use developments while James Watson brings us back to earth with a bump, reminding us that mixed-use masterplans are of little use without detailed funding and delivery plans.

Douglas Clarke challenges the notion that iconic buildings and cultural attractions actually make a difference to inward investment decisions while Joanna Averley, formally of CABE, presents her thoughts on how public agencies and developers alike can think about culture and design to create value.

Meanwhile, our regulars on economics and branding are still here, together with a new collection of ‘My Favourite Destination’ stories and the most recent Locum News.

We hope that you enjoy the new look and the range of articles presented in this special issue and wish you well with your own destinations in the coming months.
